It doesn't bother me having 10 year old technology when I'm riding for fun. Why? Because they are simple and much easier to maintain. That's how the MAJORITY of the world wants it, simple and reliable, equals fun and not having to worry about anything but riding.
Now I'm a racer as well, when it comes to that, SURE, I want the latest and greatest! I don't want no 10 year old techno bike to race, but here is the REALITY, A SMALL PORTION OF BUYERS ACTUALLY RACE!!!!
There for a while I wanted a rip snorting machine to trail ride, but then I realized it wasn't as fun, so I just ride the wife's (I just say it's hers[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]) 400ex and have no worries. Now the rest of you just don't realise that yet, or you just have to buy a big bore to make up for your small nuggets!
P.S. I don't like the IRA set up either. So there, we agree on sumpin.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

Nice suspension, good brakes,power and high GC is nice no matter when or where. My Big Bear and 450 Foreman with 10 year old tech stuff sure would go 70 miles down a rough trail but the fun factor was limited.

Polaris built automatics. Everyone followed along.
Polaris built long travel comfortable suspensions. Everyone followed along.
Polaris built IRS utility quads. Everyone followed along.
Polaris built IRS sport quads. Everyone WILL follow along. They aren't going away. In 10 years the straight axle sport quads will be a minority.

well i will never buy a non stright axle quad because i like to trick my quads out and with irs you cant extend so that why i will never buy. well unless they figure out to to put a +6 extanded on the back a-arms.

How many belts have you replaced vs. how many 5 speeds you have replaced? Also if autos are so perfect , why are motorcycles still 5 and 6 speeds?

Not saying one is better over the other, but just to me, manual trannies are more fun IMO. Like a Jeep or 4wd pickup that you want to crawl around off road, a 4 or 5 speed is just more fun to me, guess it gives you more to do. There is definately a market for both.

The desert southwest is sport quad country! There are probably more sport quad riders in So. Calif., than there are riders in all the other states combined. I mean it is huge! The freeways are packed on a Friday afternoons with trailers loaded with quads headed for the deserts. You can stand on a freeway overpass and watch $1,000,000 of gear go by every couple of minutes! And don't think like some ignorant easterners do that it is all dunes out here. In fact, dunes are quite rare, and most folks drive for several hours to get to them.
Most of the riding is actually hard a$$ desert cross country. I don't really see much of an application for any IRS machine out here. I mean, who wants to go flying down a wash at 80 mph on some flip floppy IRS mush box, when what you need is the ultra stability of an SRA. And busting out big air on an IRS, well keep dreaming....
Then again, is the 700 actually a "sport" quad, and not really some kind of hybrid in a class all its own??? The 700 is a machine for rutted eastern trails, and that is where its (modest) sales will be. But, knowing Honda they will take it to Baja (one time only though!) in November and win on it anyway, just like they did with the Rincon!

I have 3 Polaris quads, a '96 bought new, an '04, and an '06 bought new, and I have never replaced a belt. In fact the only things I have had to replace on any of them is the tie rod ends and a starter drive on the '96. If and when I need to replace a belt it is not very expensive or difficult to do, unlike working on a manual, or debugging a Honda automatic.
Auto aren't perfect and neither are manuals. The place that CVT automatics excel is in no shifting low speed deceleration and acceleration, just like we do off road. They aren't used on sport quads because of the weight and size of the CVT and transmission and because it isn't as efficient as a standard transmission, and a standard has better control of tire speed. The size and weight is the reason it isn't used on off road bikes also.
The reason they are so popular is because lots of people don't want to shift gears constantly and an auto is easier to ride in tricky situations. Most of the people I see out there riding aren't Ricky Racer types, they are utility riders.
