AIR FILTER CAME OFF 300EX!!
#1
I replaced the stock filter with a White Bros. Powerfilter. Stock Honda filters have a wire cage insert (this is actually a spark arrestor to prevent a fire if you backfire into the carburator), and it is rather restrictive. The Powerfilter is held open by a spring (the insert doesn't fit), and has way better air flow than stock. The filter just slips over the intake duct and is held by a metal band.
Anyway, we were out at Ocotillo Wells (MAJOR DUST!!) this weekend. We were doing jumps in some small dunes (the kids are light and can get some BIG AIR on the 300). Appearently the impact of the landings knocked the filter off at some point. I check my filters several times a day in dusty conditions so I caught it pretty quick, but there was a fair amount of very fine dust in the intake. The engine seems OK for now, but it's life span has probably been severely shortened. So folks, keep a close eye on your filters!!
