PLEASE HELP ! 1988 trx300 4x4 stuck in gear
#1
Hello people , nice forums ! Sure hope someone can help me out ! I have a 1988 fourtrax trx 300 that ran great but now it is stuck in gear . Cant get into Neutral to start it anymore . Seems like it clicks into gears going one up or one down .It will roll backwards freely , but not forward . Rocking didnt do much either . I can use the kick start on it , but when I do it just rolls forward . Any help would be fantastic !

Thanks for the reply ! Wouldnt the tranny still shift through all the gears even with the possible diagnosis you made ? I wish I knew more about these things !

have been talking to my cuosin after i posted that, and he reminded me that when my dad got a used 300 it was stuck in gear. i don't know much about working on motors(everything but them), but my cousin took off the right crankcase cover and cleaned on the gears and now she runs and shifts the best of all the atvs that i've drove.

Anyone else have an idea ?I can also jumper the battery positive to the solenoid and the engine will turn over without the unit moving at all but I have no spark (I assume since it is not in neutral) . However It will still roll forward when I try to use the kickstart . Strange !

Does the pedal return to mid position when you press it? I assume you have tried rocking it forwards and back while changing gear? If so, and it won't change, you are going to have to take a look at the selector mechanism. As mentioned above RH (clutch) cover off and see what is going on in there. Gearchange problems are unusual on the 300, note this post is from 2007, so I don't know of any common problems, the 350/450s often break the lever or the pawl which moves the starwheel round, or the starwheel comes loose on the end of the shift drum. Unless you are very unlucky, something will be bent, broken or loose, behind that clutch cover.
