If you pick a motorcycle oil that is API SG/JASO MA you won't go wrong. The SG insures that it has a good additive package, and the MA insures that it is safe for your wet clutch.
Beyond that, the synthetics have huge advantages over plain old petroleum oil, and the ester synthetics have advantages over the other two types of synthetics (but it is expensive).
I prefer Maxima's oils...they have the best additive package in the business! I run Maxima Extra ester synthetic in everything. If you are working on the cheap, Maxima Premium is a basic petroleum oil for about $4 a liter, and Blend is priced somewhere between Premium and Extra.
The 400EX is air cooled so it can run hot sometimes, and it is prone to wear in the cam area if it isn't well lubricated. Best to go with oils on the thicker side for this engine! I live in So. Calif., so I run 10W40 in winter and 15W50 in summer.
