250r or 400ex? need help!!!
#1
I have a question for everyone out there. What is going to be the best quad for everything; not just racing, or high speed i mean everything. Should i get an 86 250r that is bone stock and in emaculate condition or keep my 400ex with some work done.
Plus which one of these two is going to restond the best to modifications?
Thanx, matt

If you are not out to just race the circuits, I say keep the 400ex. If you are into the weekend trails, but still want to go fast, the 400ex is the ticket. It has reliable 4 stroke power, electric start and is just as good in the woods as the 250r.
In my 15yrs of riding, I have had them all, Tecate4, Quad Racer, Quadzilla, Quad Sport, 250r they all were great bikes. The thing for me now is to hit the starter and go riding. I hate the reliability and the maintenance of a 2 stroke bike anymore!(Old age I guess) You really have to decide on what you want to do and how much time you want to spend on your bike.
What really started to erk me, was when the buddies would call on thursday and tell me everyone is going to ride on Saturday, and I couldn't go cause I had my motor tore apart. No more of that! I'm READY! LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I've been off-roading for over 40 years (yeah, I'm an old guy). I've ridden just about every quad I could get my hands on.
Now, then, I keep on reading here about the unreliability of the 2-stroke. I don't know what all you people are doing to your motors to make them so bad, but mine hasn't missed a lick in over 4 years! Clean air filter, change the oil twice a year, that's it!
If you want to go fast get an R. They respond remarkably well to mods; just add a pipe and air box mods, all external stuff and boost your ponies by over 10% for very little money.
If you want to just putt around, climb over logs, ride double, get an EX.
But, if you really want the best, get an R.
Don't ever wonder what you're missing.

Just do what I did. Buy one of each. I have an 86 250R and a 2000 400EX. I was contemplating selling one of them, but, for some reason, I can't bring myself to sell either one. They are both great machines. I can do on my R the same things that I do on my EX. As for maintenance, both will break if you don't take care of them. You should ride each one in the same conditions and determine which one you like the best. There is nothing like the zip of a 2 stroke, but, hitting that little red button to start one is nice also. The only draw back about a 250R is that they are getting old. Stressed frames, high cost of part, etc. But, that doesn't bother me as much as it does some people. Good luck, Brent

Trapperb1 covered it, go with the 250R if you want speed. The 250R is one of the hottest quads ever produced. A 2 stroke can be very reliable if you maintain it correctly and you'll get more power from mods to a 2 stroke. If you just want to gas & go and don't have the time to keep your air filter clean then stay with the 400.
