Default 420 vs 500

recon ranger we have a 420es here now with over 500 miles on and it backfires like a shotgun when you go down a hill. i know you love your hondas but this is not the first one we have had issues with. i can only hope since they have delayed the 08 420 models that they are fixxing some issues...

Mine backfired several times when new, but only when decelerating under engine compression braking. I think I was the first one here in the forum to get one, so I posted this early, and lots of other folks said the same thing but the consesus seems to be that it goes away after a while. You may just have a weird one....

One theory is that the exhaust is hot, and that ignites some unburned fuel during deceleration. When the exhaust soots up a little bit, it runs cooler and the problem goes away.

They use to offer the blue color, like the old 300. That's my favorite.</end quote></div>

Glad to know your favorite color...lol.

My quads work for a living...if they're not getting dirty, they're not pulling their weight.

Get a bang out of these guys with 100 sq ft driveways who justify a $6000 machine to "push snow" with 3 months out of the year. Hard enough for me to justify the cost of these machines, and I'm running a cow/calf operation.

![/b] I wouldn't trade it for any one of the multitude of big bore IRS mush boxes out there.

not even a rinny???

I'd rather have the new Rancher than a Rincon. But that is just me.

why is that?i've owned both a 03 350 rancher es,and a 04 400 rancher AT.the only thing my new rincon lacks that would be usefull from the rancher lineup is the engine braking,i thought i would miss the five speed but the three speed is just fine.also the pure grin factor when the rinny pulls the front end up like nothing is priceless.also the irs sure helps the lower back.

I would buy a Rancher over the Rincon because it seems to offer the most bang-for-the-buck. Retail, it's $5300. Can't beat it. The new FI 420 I hear is very capable. It's off-camber stability is unmatched. Plus the Rancher just seems like it would be more fun.

One thing about the Rancher I haven't heard much about though is how comfortable the ride is over boulders? I have a Honda Rubicon and, considering the fact that it has an SRA, I think it's plenty comfortable. It scrapes over boulders more than my Grizzly but I can live with it.

I've just never been a fan of the Rincon. It just seems to be lacking in a lot of areas that would make it a solid fit in the sport-ute market. For instance, does it have those convenient storage areas? how is the engine braking? (we all know it sucks) How well does it plow or tow compared to others sport-utes? Plus, I think it's overpriced for what you get.

Just read an entire review section with this new 420 getting some pretty bad raps. Anybody else with these experiences??

it has a storage area, yes we know the engine braking isnt good.truth is i dont need a 680cc quad, but i was going to buy a new quad,it was going to be a honda,it was going to be IRS.the only thing honda offers in IRS is the rincon.
if they offered the 420 or 500 in IRS i would have bought one of those.i do 95%trail riding, the rincon is awesome for that, fast, tight trail stuff.all that said after owning a big bore quad,i would never go back to a smaller one.
