Some good reads on oils:

Who's oil are you thinking of running???

If it is an API SG/JASO MA motorcycle specific oil...then yes. If it is a car oil...then no...and particularly not highly friction modified "energy conserving" car oils. The SG insures that it has at least a minimal amount of additives to protect your engine and transmission, and the MA insures that it doesn't have friction modifiers that will make your clutch slip.

There is an old rumor that synthetic will make a clutch slip, but it just isn't true. I ran Maxiam Extra ester synthetic in my old Recon, and 250EX's for many years now.

There are three different types of synthetics, and they are quite different from each other. Rotella is Group III, Mobil 1 and Amsoil are Group IV, and the Esters (RedLine, some Maxima, some Motul, some Klotz) are Group V:

You mentioned 10W30. In most climates, 10W40 makes a good summer oil and 5W30 a good winter oil.

Here in So. Calif., I run 15W50 in our very hot summers, and 10W30 in our relatively mild winters.
