I curious about the 250R
what is the top speed of a bone stock 86 250R?
I have heard that the 1986 model is the fastest?
Would a 400ex with a 440 kit pipe and cam keep
up or beat a 250R<stock no mods>? If not what mods would the ex take to beat a 250R. Im just curious as I see a lot of people talk about how fast the 250 is. Please awnswer as this has been bothering me for sometime

Thanks
JT

I smoked a race ready 250r with a stock 400ex. Now the guy has a 660r, and I have a 440 big bore kit and a few other add ons. I get him of the line but he has me top end.

THAT 250R WASN'T TOO RACE READY IF YOU BEAT IT WITH YOUR BONE STOCK 400EX. WITH A FEW MINOR MODS(EXHAUST, PORT, CAM) YOU CAN HANG IF NOT SURPASS A FRESH 250R. BUT IF YOU WERE RACING A 250R WITH SOME AGE ON THE MOTOR YOU WILL EASILY HAVE A SUPERIOR MACHINE SINCE THE 250R IS A 2-STROKES AND IS RIDDEN VERY AGGRESSIVELY IT GRADUALLY LOOSES POWER MUCH FASTER THAN A 4-STROKE

My riding buddy has a bone stock 99 400EX and I have an 87 250R with a pipe and rad valve. We are almost dead even in a drag race - I slowly pull away when I get to sixth gear but not by much. I weigh 100 pounds more than him, though. When we trade bikes and he is on my R he pulls away pretty badly.

Just my personal experience.

I still wonder why people ask for highest top-speed of a machine. You don't ride there, but, for a stock geared 250R, it's about 72mph. It can be geared to go slower or faster depending on the countershaft sprocket and rear gear.
All stock geared R's go the same speed. The 86 is not faster. All stock R's have the same CC engine and horsepower.

A stock 400EX smoking a "race ready" 250R? Gimme a break. Top speed they are comparable. Take one to Glamis and see if it will keep up with me (NOT!). Are you sure the guy on the R knew he was in a race?

i have a 86 250r with fmf pipe sliencer filter reeds and paddles and my freind has a 99 400 ex with a big gun pipe (complete system) k&n filter
When we race up the face of sand mountain(utah) he can get me off the line for about 20 feet then i cathch up and beat him and just keep pulling away
On the flats it is even worse he can't touch me off the bottem or on top end his 5th gear is only as fast as my 4th gear. I like to ride his ex because it will ride whellie's all over the place and you can lung the thing to death and still make it up hills and if your not in powerband in a r you will power out.

actually the 86 would be the slowest ever. in 86 and 87 they had 39 tooth sprockets. in 88 and 89 they had 38. and in 87 they used the long rod.and in 88 they started to make exhaust port improvments. so the 86 is geared lower and has slightly lower power.
