Default 400ex engine trouble

Back in April I bought a 2001 400ex. Over time I began to notice that it was burnig oil at a very rapid rate. It seems to happen only in a certain rpm range or when i let off the throttle. The guy i bought it from had a crappy air filter in it and it pretty much had fallen apart. I think that dirt got into the engine and scored the cylinder wall, or the valve seel went bad. My dad doesnt think it is necessary to take it apart, but i cant keep paying for oil every time i go ride. please help, any information will be appreciated.

Either do a rebuild or keep paying for oil...I don't think there is any easy way out of this one. If it is just valve guides and not rings (valve guides go first on these engines), then you will get off easier.

Might help if you run thicker oils, like 20W50. The thicker oil film might help seal things better, and get you by on your next ride.
