Default Honda ATC200 3-wheeler starting issues . . .

Hey guys !

I recently bought an old model 200 ATC. When I bought the trike it ran really rough. So I put in a new Carb, changed the plug, and the ignition coil. It ran fine for awhile. Now after riding it a couple times it killed and wont start at all. It's a pull start bike and I see that I have fire when I disconnect the spark plug wire. If you guys have any ideas of what be causing this or need more info on the symptoms get back with me please.

Hmm these old hondas were bad about rusty tanks, is your tank rusty? If so I would suspect trash in the carb, doesn't take much to plug up that secondary jet. If youve got a rusty tank i would reclean the carb really good and install an inline fuel filter. If thats not the case lemme know and we can go on with the troubleshooting from there. Hope this helps. aratvguy.

hey Aratvguy,

When I started to change out parts and such I cleaned the gas tank(Its plastic of course) and filled it with new gas. What I don't understand is after the new carb, new plug, new ignition coil and wire. the bike ran like a champ. After riding it for a couple days it started to hesitate and pop a little. On my way home from riding the bike it killed and wouldn't start back. Had to get it towed home by a buddy riding with me. I am sure you can help diagnose whats going on. Thanks !

Yes that is correct. The trike is probably really early 80's. So it has the recoil with the pull rope( like a lawnmower). When i first put the new parts in it started right up after 2 pulls. So I dont think its a problem there, even if the recoil is bad, why would it make it kill in mid ride?

Pull the cover on the side of the head, The one with a wire harness coming out of it. The pickup coil is under there. Make sure it is cleaned of the red dust, properly gapped and if possable sheck it for resistance. Not positive, but I believe the spec between the 2 wires is 320 ohms. If no ohm meter available, take a test light, ground the clip to the motor and touch the probe to the wire connectors coming from under that cover. When pulled over with the recoil it should pulse the test light (flash). Other items to check would be the kill switch and the CDI box

PM your email address and model of ATC .. If you don't know the model , then PM the engine numbers (they should be just above/beside the gearshift) .. I will email you the ignition section ..

I had a problem just like this one on another honda 200. plug would spark but wasn't getting hot enough to run the engine. After many hours of testing and retesting I finally tracked the problem down to the plug that comes out of the stator (was showing continuity through the plug but too much resistance to properly power the recifier\regulator unit). Thouroughly cleaned the plug and she fired up and ran fine first pull. The plug I had a problem with was the one with 3 yellow wires that come out of the stator unit where it connects to the next plug. the contacts were full of dirt mud and somekinda white substance??? lol dunno where the white goop came from but cleaning it off sure did the trick.
