Rancher 420 FI question
#1
My brother has a rancher 420 FI 2x4. It has less than 200 miles on it. On COLD start up it has a bad miss and will die at times. When giving it throttle it will cough and miss (and will die) until it gets good and warmed up(may take 5 minutes or longer). Once warmed up, it seems to run fine. It's been to the shop where a fouled plug was discovered but still does the same thing. It's been hooked up to the Honda service diagnostic computer, but no codes are given(every thing shows normal). Any suggestions??? Seems like a bad sensor or a bad fuel injector to me.

Fuel is pretty dirty stuff to begin with, and you put it in an ATV that is in dusty conditions all the time and it is even worse.
I haven't had any problems myself yet, but give some fuel injector cleaner a try. I use RedLine in my trucks.

That's about how long a liguid cooled motor's engine oil needs to warm up when its cold out.
I start it up and go back in the house for a coffee.
A winter grade oil will speed things up some.

Sounds like a tight valve issue or a stickey IACV.
I have been chasing cold weather start issues on these 420's.
Temps have dropped again so I can resume tests
Too bad your dealer never took a 60 second snapshot of the system and could send me the file. I would like to look at it

Hi Gregg,
Just curious by what you meant when saying "I have been chasing cold weather start issues on these 420's?" Does there appear to be a problem with these models, or by "chasing" are you trying to discover if they do for curiousity sake?
Thanks

When you say it doesn't start in COLD temps, how cold are we talking?
There have been some threads about Rincon hard starts when very cold. Apparently disassembling the IAC and removing the heavy grease helps, as does a warmer heat range plug.

My 420 sets out under a cover and I keep a battery minder on it all the time.
Was 5 degrees out the other morning when I went to plow snow. When I go to start my 420, I let it turn over a few times, then stop (don't turn key off), then it starts right up, allows the EFI to sence temp and baro pressure.
I also run Iso-heet in the gas.
I let it warn up good before I go plowing ( 10 minutes, at least).
