Default 400ex fuel filter

Is there a fuel filter between the tank and petcock?

Would it be a good idea to splice in on of those inline filters between the petcock and carb?

I've read a couple of posts regarding stuck floats and dirty jets and such recently and wonder if one of those cheap filters would be good preventitive maintence.

Thanks

Default 400ex fuel filter

I have never owned a quad/dirt bike that came with a fuel line filter. I use to put then on, but haven't on any of my recent purchases. I need to do it......

O.K most problems START.. with owners as far as stuck Floats & Dirty Jets GO!!!! one of them being contaminated fuel. (unknown to the owner/operator) possibly. either knowing or not contamination plugs up main jets. which means cleanin' the carb. & clear main (I usually use a torch tip cleaner for that.) second what I usually recommend on any machine that only see's about 6 months worth of use (Boat,Snowmobile,ETC...) 1. if it's gonna sit a month or more put Stabil in the tank or run it OUT!!!!! 2. which actually should be no. 1 shut off fuel and let machine run till it dies. that way there if fuel in tank goes bad drain & refill However you will Probably NEVER EVER HAVE another carb. problem again...

I usually put an inline filter on my quads. Not to hard on the 400ex, but it does have a stubby fuel line, and youll have to take your time splicing it in there, so it ends up in a good place. Dont use a paper type filter, use the ones with a brass screen, which everyone sells. Denniskirk, and rockymountainatv both stock them, and so does almost any atv/motorcycle dealer. They are a cheap thing to add, which gives protection from debries, and is also a very good visual indicator( if you get the clear plastic filter), if gas is flowing to the carb for troubleshooting issues.
