I take it the fan runs OK, and you are sure all the fins are clear? It might be possible that the temp sensor is faulty, too.

Also, if you change the coolant (and if you haven't, you should) be sure to use motorcycle specific stuff, like Honda's or a variety of aftermarket stuff.

Automotive coolant has silicates in it, abrasives that help control corrosion. The mechanical seal in motorcycles (and quads) is much smaller, and doesn't live long with the abrasives, so motorcycle stuff doesn't use silicates.

May as well pull the thermostat and either just replace it or check it, while you've got the coolant drained.

I would suspect it is a Honda specific part... Even so, I can't imagine they would be much.

Was the fan running?

Have you checked the coolant level in the radiator?

If the seal is bad on the radiator cap it can loose coolant, and/or not pressurize the system properly. Could still be the thermostat.

At 6 years old, it should have the coolant changed.

No, the coolant should not be boiling. The radiator cap is located under the little hatch in the middle of the front rack.
