Default Engine or Motor ?

OK, I was argueing with a feller and I think I am right.

I happened to call an engine, 'motor' during conversation and it spured the arguement.

He said a powerplant in a quad is called an engine as it is powered off fuel, and a motor is powered off electricity....

Here is my point.... Honda has a kw rating on their powerplants so actually it IS a motor

Who is correct ?

I was always told engine gas, motor electric. It has a kw rating yes but it is still powered by gas = engine

Technically sdm111 is right, but if you look at tools and stuff they call it both, motor stand, you here more people say they pulled a motor than an engine

One of my points was that bikes are called motorcycles and not enginecycles...

A 200HP "outboard motor" is not electric. You do not hear the term "Outboard engine" much at the Marina.

I can get stubborn when in an arguement... hehehe
Some good points so far, I should have thought of the marine aspect for arguement sake

Great points but it is still internal combustion requiring fuel engine. if it generates revolutions by electricity motor. This has and could go on forever Anyway it's still too cold to take out the engineboat, haha.........
