Engine or Motor ?
#11
yes, a useless argument....you were wrong, but I know what you meant?
technically they (outboard motor, motorsports, motorcycle, motorhome, General Motors) are wrong, but it isn't worth arguing about unless it's for fun
have you ever heard of an electrical engine?

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>OK, I was argueing with a feller and I think I am right.
I happened to call an engine, 'motor' during conversation and it spured the arguement.
He said a powerplant in a quad is called an engine as it is powered off fuel, and a motor is powered off electricity....
Here is my point.... Honda has a kw rating on their powerplants so actually it IS a motor
Who is correct ? </end quote></div>
You are.
A "motor" is all inclusive. It talks about a machine that turns fuel into motion. Motors can burn liquid fuel, gasous fuel, solid fuel and any other fuel including electricity.
An engine includes all of the above except electricity.
For example, you can point to the thing on your refrigerator and say that is a motor; but you can't say that is an engine. But you can point to a nasty big block Chevy and say "look at that motor!!!" Or you can say, "look at that engine!!!" Both are correct.
Next time you talk to your friend tell him he will have to change a lot of his speach if he is correct.
For example: Outboard motors, Motor homes, Motor carriers...........and about a dozen more........
Outboard engine just does not sound right!!!!!!! LOL Engine home???!!!! LMAO

I can't believe i'm wasting my time with this. Who would waste time sparking an argument when he knows the context.

someone that likes arguing for fun?
just because it says so in THAT version of a dictionary doesn't mean its correct. Check the Oxford English dictionary. It says that an engine converts thermal energy to motion. just because someone has been misusing the word for decades does not mean it's correct. motor is a good synonym for engine. most define engine as a type of motor. I guess what we can't say is an electrical engine, but I don't see the problem calling an engine a motor.
again, not really worth arguing -- unless it's for fun
