05 trx vs 06?
#1
I just bought an 05 TRX, and now im hearing i should have bought an 06 model from friends , they said the 06 is quite a bit faster... If thats true anyone know how much "FASTER" it would be? I dont want to have to sell my quad i just got to get the same one but 1 year newer.. whats the HP diffrence?
they also told me it would take about 1000bux to put it on par with an 06 model. =\
Any response is helpful thanks!

The '06 is faster is stock trim, I don't know the HP difference.
I have an '04 (same as an '05) and I added a 480 kit, Hotcam Stage II, ported and polished head and a Yosh full system.
I also regeared it and rejetted. It is now faster than my friends '06 and a lot quicker.

I have an 04 (same as 05), and the guys I ride with have 06 or later.
The big difference is that the 04/05 has a smaller bore and longer stroke. That means you will get more bottom end power out of it, but less top end rev. This is good if you do more trail type riding where low end is needed.
BUT, the HRC kit makes all the difference in the world! It will give you back some of that top end that is missing in stock form. It is the best mod you can make for the money!
The 06 and later years are very much like the 450X dirt bike engine. It is very over square, and really likes to rev. True, it has lots of top end, but it gives up low end. On the bottom you have to rev it out, and pop the clutch for an explosive takeoff.
I ride my R in the open desert. I have the HRC kit and I have it geared down one tooth in front, because I like explosive acceleration! If I punch it hard, it will jerk my arms, kind of remeniscent of how the old Banshee was. I am giving up some top end, but it isn't like my buddies on their 06 and later machines are killing me or leaving me in the dust. Usually, it isn't going to be safe to go any faster than I go anyway....

Be sure you are up on maintenance issues for this engine (try a search)! All the 450's need frequent oil changes, best to run extra oil in the transmission (I run an extra 100 cc's), keep up on valve adjustments, etc.
Best to run a high quality synthetic oil in this engine! http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm
