Default 01' rubi cannot retrieve codes

I just purchased an 01' rubicon that is stuck in fault mode. The display blinks, cuts out in reverse, and says its going 0 all the time. It came with a honda service manual and I followed the code retrieval method, but it just continually blinks. I tried the reset procedure and still the same. Its just continous blink with no different spacing between blinks. When you take off when its cold it will work for maybe a minute. It seems to work a good while in esp mode if I'm just putting around in the first few gears. then when I get on it it will fault out. When it is working properly, reverse works fine. no cutting out. But the MPH gauge does not work ever. I bought the quad this way and the previous owner just put a new timing chain in it. It runs great I just wish I could fix this thing and make it ridable. thanks ahead for any advice.

Default 01' rubi cannot retrieve codes

Wish I could help. I have a 01 Rubicon doing kind of the same thing. On the instrument cluster, it's blinking a code, in reverse it barely moves then cuts on and off. Seems to be stuck in high gear. The only thing I could tell it might be is the shift solenoid or at least that's what I think it's called on the left side of the engine going into the transmission. When I turn the key on, the solenoid seems to engage and make a noise for a couple seconds. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a bad angle sensor, sometimes it will just stay blinking untill you replace it.

Wheres the angle sensor located and would this happen if its a angle sensor. I turned the switch on and off about ten times then it cleared out and started shifting fine . It set then I went back the problem reappeared .Problem being cuts back in reverse and not shifting and instrument cluster blinking instead of the gear it's in showing...

The angle sensor is on the left side behind the plastic cover over the exhaust. Yes this can make the screen just blink and not be able to pull up a code.

Yeah, Thanks cluby. sounds like I should try an angle sensor first. I read somewere that you had to preload those before install? Also I wonder if that would make my MPH gauge not work? Thanks
