Default Where is the regulator on the 91 250x???

Ok im trying to hook up a headlight to my 250x. I bought it without one and the harness was cut. I bought a cheap $11 round headlight from Napa. Well i grounded the light, and took the wire coming out of it first into the hot wire coming out of the stator. Well it worked fine till i accelerated, then the light burned out. Ok so then i decided to try running the wire to the hot wire in the main harness around the stator and coil. Same thing, worked fine till i revved the 4 wheeler up. I looked all around and i couldnt find the regulator. Am i maybe getting a light not meant for high voltage or what. Im assuming the bike puts out 12 volts when revved , maybe 14 but shouldnt be more. Can anyone lead me into the right direction to get a light on here. I dont have the factory switch either.

Its mounted on the front left side, up under the fenders. There is a 2 pin connector, and it has a big finned heat sink on it.
There is a test for voltage...find the 4 pin connector with a green, brown, white/yellow, and green black wires. Pull the rubber insulation back from the connector, but dont disconnect it yet. connect the voltmeter, between the white/yellow and green terminals. Start the motor and watch the voltage as you rev the motor. it should be 12.5 to 13.5 volts.
Check for loose or coroded connections.
Let me know what you find.
Here is a pic of what it looks like

Ok well i checked today, and i guess someone decided to get rid of the voltage regulator. I dont have it. I see where a connector was just taped off. The only thing i have up there is the coil and cdi box. Ive burnt 2 lights out within seconds so i guess i need to check the wires coming from the stator. Are those the ones your talking about? I was reading that there is 1 wire coming out of the stator that puts out up to 12 volts and another that puts out up to 20 volts when revved. If thats true, i need to find the lower one and hook the light up to it with a switch. What do you think

Id buy a cheap regulator from ebay, and wire it in. Should be less than 20 bucks shipped.( see item number 150208989941) Then the lights should work with no issues.

Ok if i do that, all i have to do is plug the regulator in the plug and then where should i wire the light from? Should i wire it from the regulator or from any power source?

Hook it back up to where the old one was cut out. Match the wire color code, and if the last guy didnt butcher it up too bad, it should be good to go.
