Default Honda Big Red

I have a 1985 Honda Big Red. It was running fine without problems. I went to start it and when I hit the electric start button it just clicks one time. I tried jumping the solenoid and it just clicks one time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sound's like a battery a battery connection or dead battery , check to see if the battery terminals are tight and free of any corrision ; there is a aluminum relay box that's hooked to either the positive battery post or the negative side it's been awhile since i worked on a Honda Big Red !

I have an Intertec Manual but it only cover's the ATC250ES , ATC250SX and the TRX250 ; and did you try the manual starter ?

I would try to charge the battery and clean the battery cable's for corrsion or try a new battery or use the manual starter , try these thing's first !.......

Thanks for responding so quick.

The battery has 12.5 volts.

When I hit the starter button I get one click as if a solenoid or bad starter.

Any suggestions?

An almost dead battery will still show 12 volts. It needs to be able to draw enough amps from the battery to turn it over. One click is almost always a battery cable or charging issue. Or a corroded connection somewhere. It has just enough power or connection to get enough power to hear an audible click- then nothing till it sets a bit and builds up enough energy to click again.

Starter brushes are shot, the system is working fine if the solenoid clicks

take a test light to the starter cable terminal at the starter, push the starter button, if it lights, the starter brushes are bad because it will not turn the trike over

Thanks for the help.

It turned out that I had a loose battery terminal and also another wire that had to be repaired.

I want to change the oil - can you tell me what kind of oil I am supposed to use?

Thanks.

cowboy I have use Regular Castrol GTX 10w40 in winter and 20w50 in summer in wet sump type engine's and never had an issue with clutch slippage , just look on the back of the bottle to see to make sure it doesn't have the energy saving seal or dougnut ; use a oil with an SAE API rating of SF SH SG or SJ rating and you will be ready to go all my quad's had the wet sump system and i've never has any trouble !

Your Honda Dealer and other on these forums will tell you different i'm sure , but as i have stated i've not had an issue using this type of oil , and i've owned an 86' Honda TRX350 Foreman 4x4 , a 93' Suzuki LT4WD 300 KQ and i now ride a 2006 Arctic cat 400 FIS Auto with the Suzuki 376cc Engine and Suzuki's Duramatic Belt Driven Clutch Transmission ; and i ask my Dealer if it would be ok to use the same oil as i did my other Quad's and she told me it would be fine !............
