Have a quick question for any Honda mechanics....

I have the opportunity to buy a Hondamatic....cheap.... however, its partially taken apart..... I wasn't really aware that they could be taken apart, but i guess they are.

So what I was wondering it there was a diagram to put them back together and if they can be? Because I thought they were sealed units?

Thanks

The service manual doesn't tell you how to take them apart or test them sooo. I wouldn't buy one that was taken apart. Keep watch on ebay they seem to pop up on there quite often. All years will work.

If it is for a 400AT I could help you out with one

Cluby, haven't heard from you in a while, I sent you a PM for a stupid question that has slipped my mind.

Thanks

We've had a few apart ... They can be taken apart but Honda doesn't make/sell replacement parts .. We've changed dozens of Hydrostatic transmissions in Rubicons since 2001 and a LOT were still good but Honda Canada wanted them changed as an assy. even tho the oil pump was the problem (low pressure) .. I wish now that I would have labeled the good pumps ..

I will post some pictures of a dis-assembled Hydrostatic unit as soon as I find the pics ..

Ya Gimpster, I have been away from this site for awhile. Just needed a break, you know you give good tech and some people won't listen.

Good pics of HFT unit disasembled there. I took a bad one apart once got so far then quit.

My only question would be once you have it apart what other than a bearing would you replace?

I myself have done over 10 from 2001, mostly cause of low oil pressure. Honda wanted use to reuse the HFT and just put in a oil pump, but once back together it grind or make noise. Then back all the way apart to rnr the HFT. I think not we just told them it wouldn't pass the bench test. So I had a pile of questionable HFT units. I still have one left for a 500. Just put one in a friend of mine, told him great if it works, if not get out the checkbook 1400 bucks over the counter.
