My buddy has an 86 i think it is. has anyone had trouble with snapping the front drive shaft. dont know the exact name of it, its the one going down the inside of the front swing arm to drive the front wheels. Its been in his family for id say 10 years now and they have snapped 2 or 3 of them. he just decided to leave the front shaft out and going 2wd considering the bike probably isnt worth as much as the new shaft. i dont know what the problem is, must be binding somewhere. the guys at the local honda shop said that is very rare.

I have an 89 and love it we have replaced all bearings in the rear end and just put a new ujoint in for the rear. It has been completly sunk and used hard on a cattle ranch for everything from fencing to moving cows and lots of spraying weeds. I tried to replace with a 02 450es but i still love the old 300 and use it more than the 450. It is a great ulility quad for me.

the only trouble ive had with mine is the gas tank started rusting and i put some stuff that covers the inside of it. but now it leaks gas and the only way to get it to stop is to turn the gas off. i hate it a lot since gas is over 3 bucks a gallon. back when i first got it 5 bucks would nearly fill it up, now it takes like 10..

Everytime I see one of those 300 fourtrax, I can't help but remember years ago when I worked at a stealership for about 8 months.
Someone had bought a 2wd 300 and they did the first oil change. BUT, when they replaced the oil filter they put it in backwards and starved it for oil. The customer brought it in to check what the noise was, the mechanic pulled the oil filter cover and proceded to tear the engine apart to find out the extent of the damage. After talking to the Honda rep. he said that Honda would cover the repair even though it was entirely the customers fault. So, thanks to honda he got a new head and everything inside the head.
I've been die hard Honda fan since then...

I'm a Yamaha guy, but I love them, I have an 88 Honda 300 4X4, that has the crap beat out of it all the time(the gas tank did rust on it to, but I painted it, a couple days ago), and I have a 92 4X4 thats just for parts, and my dad has a 91 4X4, a 92 4X2, and a 99 4X2, I love them. here's a few pics.
took this one last night, you can see my freshly painted gas tank.(the 88 4X4)
this is a bad pic, but the 99 is in the front, and a 92, and a 91 4X4(also, there is an 88 Yamaha Moto-4 200, 89 Warrior, and 98 Big Bear 4X4)
