The very first run, had some soft axles.

If you can get an 05 or later, it will have reverse.

This engine responds nicely to the basic mods like opening up the airbox, aftermarket air filter, a header and muffler, and of course a rejet....with no effect on reliability.

i had an '05 and it was the best quad i could ask for. i never had to worry about getting stranded, and it was fast enough that my buddies couldn't just run off and leave me behind. Reverse is the best thing they ever put on them!!! Good luck.

what do you think id look to pay for a nice 05? and would it be worth putting a high comp piston in it, cam, and a rev box? anything else putting on it? thanks again

Don't mess with the internals of this engine!!! It will kill the reliability. While it made sense to mod this engine a decade ago when it was the only game in town, the best thing to do if you need more motor is to step up to a higher performance machine. A Z400 is very similar in terms of handling, and has more motor out of the box.....

I know how good i talked about the 05 EX, but now that someone else mentions it the Z400 Suzuki is a much faster quad they come stock with fairly high compression, and they have reverse, and they are water cooled where the EX is air cooled. There reliability is quite close to the Honda also, my friend beat the sh** out of his Z400 and never had the first problem.
