White smoke never is good iv had 2 friends with white smoke on their atvs both had blown top ends if thats your problem your looking at 600-1000 worth of work probly. Did you change your oil and oil filter on time and kept water out of the engine.

Hi, I have changed the oil serveral time as for the filter, I don;t know if it has one and if it does I have know idea where it is. As for the water out of the engine.....Well.... I took it out mudding and ended up in a really deep hole. I do not have a snorkel... a lesson learned. I have had this machine for 1 yr, I bought it brand new, Haven;t rode it in months cause of the smoke and the ticking sound.
thanks for your reply.

Is this machine water cooled or air cooled?

Air cooled and it has a centrifugal oil cleaner that needs to be serviced every 200 hours or so.

Do a compresson and a leak down test! I wouldn't ride it, because of the risk of further damage...

Sounds like the rings then. The ticking sound may just be the valves out of adjustment. Look around for mechanics in your area. A rebuild will be high from the dealer unless your still under warranty. I rebuild pushrod hondas for 300 when the shop will charge nearly 1000.

I would venture to say the white smoke is the rings being shot from the "deep hole" and the ticking is probably the upper rod bearing having excess clearance to the piston wrist pin (same "deep hole") - requiring the rod to need replacing = complete engine job............

Smile and be happy that you don't have an early model Recon as parts cost almost 2X's as much to rebuild the bottom end as a later Recon engine

While we are on the topic of Recons, how much would a new or aftermarket 99 Recon motor cost? And where can I find one?

You could try finding an atv junkyard but your best bet is going to be the honda dealer.

Thanks for the advice from all. I talked to my son-in-law and he said he could do the engine repair, he is not a certified mechanic but he has been around engines all his life. Still thinking about letting him do it and save some money or just take it to the honda shop.

Any advice??????????
