400ex airbox help !

I've been having dust in boot between air filter and carb. tried three differant filters with the same results. i'm wondering if the breather vent from crankcase to the boot might have somthing to do with it. hose & boot are good with no weather cracking. hose clamps get tightened. CAN SOMONE PLEASE HELP????

Pull the filter off and hold your hand over the opening. Crank the starter a couple times (kill switch off!), and you should feel a vacuum develop. It should hold for quite a while, but if it doesn't then you have a leak somewhere.....

thanks reconranger i WILL check that way. I had not thought of that....I suppose i could clamp a tough latex glove around the opening to if vaccum holds also... thanks for your help !!!!

i had the same problem. the boot between my carb and airbox had a film of dust stuck to the inner walls. and my UNI filter was clean an oiled right before i rode. i did the vacuum check reconranger said and there didnt seem to be a leak anywhere. can someone please tell me what i should do?

also, dont transport on rear wheels and grab bar as fuel will drain back to air filter and clean away oil where gas runs through it. If you must haul this way, take air filter off first & obviously protect air boot from dust with filter off. shut fuel valve off also

You can shut fuel valve off, and then drain the carb (screw at the bottom of float bowl), and that saves you pulling the filter off every time you transport it.
Also, I have used a number of different filter oils over the years, and I keep coming back to both UNI filter oil and cleaner. UNI is less tacky (easier to work with and doesn't gum up the filter) than some other products out there, and it is thin enough that it applies easily. I oil mine up, then let them sit a few days (not on the engine of course) and the excess oil will drain down.
