On Ronnie's site, look at the Left crankcase cover diagram. Cover #3 has to be removed and the gears pulled out in order to tilt the starter motor sideways and removed after the rear starter mounting bolts and starter cable has been removed. The starter can be manuvered around and come out after the gears are removed. Sometimes to pull the starter back away from the case cover can be a pain as the sealing o-ring gets corroded into the case. Use a screwdriver to pry between the case and starter nose, then move the screwdriver to the other side of the starter nose and work it out back and forth. Don't try pry on one side only.
Should get you going from there.
