Default 300EX snow machine zipper vs 4 snow

Hey all,

There is a pretty nice lake in my back yard that freezes into a wonderland each winter.

Im setting my 300EX up for the winter..

I have ski do precision skis, and the mounting kit for up front on the way.

Shes geared 14/38 right now, probably be 14/39 by winter.

I have super lites on the rear right now, which is a 6 ply mud tire like
the mud lites. I feel these will dig me in rather than ride on top.

I will carbide the front skis for traction on ice, and better handling in snow.

What do I do with the rear end?

Zippers, 4 snows, or a sand tire?

Snow can get deep, but I havent seen a nasty winter here since I was a kid.

I also want to stud these tires for bare ice... is this possible?

I know I cant run with the sleds, and I cant afford a 3000$ track kit for the rear,

So whats the best option?

It will be 4.5 " wider up front once I kit the DJ kit installed, and 450R shocks are up front, and a nice rappy shock on the rear,
Nice head lights, tail light is good,

Have the big maijer hand guards up there, thinking about heated grips/throttle or the mits that go over the bars.

What else to make this a winter lake machine?

I was also thinking of mounting them (if i were to go with zippers or sand tires) on .125 douglass wheels, (to reduce weight and rotational mass)

and maybe having them slimed.

rockymountain will send me them mounted, chrome stemed, and slimed on douglas 125's for about 210 shipped..........

Can I really beat this?

If your looking for an opinion, I'd say save for a decent used snowmobile they are alot more fun then you can ever make a bike.

Most fellas here just stud out an old set of Holeshot tires and stud out something for the fronts and wait until the snowmobiles pack down the trails after a storm. Without tracks you will always dig holes in powder snow, its just alot less dense then sand. On hard pack and ice the regular tires aired down and studded out will have great traction.

This is why I drive a car with all 4 tires studded every winter.

Trust me, I know sleds are more fun,... but im not going to get a sled anywhere near as fun fast, or suspended as my 300ex for the few hundred I spend setting it up for the snow.
My uncle has a ZR 600 EFI that I borrow every winter.

I just want opinions on the tires and setup I am talking about..

Also, what keeps the skis from spinning around?

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Trust me, I know sleds are more fun,... but im not going to get a sled anywhere near as fun fast</end quote></div>

I just piced up a mint condition 340 Yamaha Enticer for $500 that hits 65mph on snow easily.

Used ATVs are rare and expensive around here but use sleds are plentiful and cheap.

But your winter EX project would be more interesting to see than just another sled on the lake or trail.

Yeah, I hear that, I pass a set of 3 older sleds for sale on the way to work every day, could probably get all 3 for under a G.

One looks mid 80's, one late 80's and one early to mid 90's.. probaly 440 or smaller for each (but i dont know)
I know theyd be a blast!..

Well.. I have the Skis Next to me right now! so theres NO turning back...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...:B:EOIBSA:MOTORS:1123

Just ordered some ski loops.

I need the mounting kit now (it can wait b/c there is no snow yet :-P )
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...1116QQitemZ4590714662

and I need to pick up 4 carbides, once I figure out what ones I need and find a deal..

So its down to paddles.. 4 snows, or zippers... hear zippers and 4 snows are comparable, they look almost the same!

I want to go with Lighter smaller rims in the back (douglas .125 X8 or 9) and 20-22" tires.. as wide as they come.. they are going to balloon up when I ride,
so I dont know If i want to go with 22 or 20 or what.. Id like the clearance, and I know She can turn 22's, as my heavy 6 ply with stock alum rim turns now up to 60/62 mph.

This is going to be alot of fun.

Anyone know what keeps the skis from spinning around since they are mounted to the hub?

Id go paddles.. But I want it to do ok on straight ice, or very shallow snow/dirt snow (you know how the trails get)
