1986 350 Honda Fourtrax stalling question. Mystery!! Any Expert advise?
Hello,
Just bought a 1986 Fourtrax 350 and the owner says that when it tends to get warm and it shuts the ignition down; it may or may not have to do with heat. Wait a few minutes and it fires back up. Anyone have any ideas what it may be. Does it every once in a while. It was taken to a dealership awhile back and they could not figure out what it is although they have seen this before.
Thanks in advance,
Allen C.

Are you sure it is ignition related at all? If a dealership did the work, they have the test procedures and should have found the issue right off if it is indeed an electrical problem.
But something else you may want to look into is the gas tank cap.
Those quads had the old style gas cap made of steel with internal componets on the vent valve made of cheap cast pot metal. They are very prone to corroding and not providing ventilation for the tank. Especially at it's age now.
Next time it quits, immediately remove the fuel cap and see if she starts back up.
May not be the answer and I would assume your dealership checked or at least blew out the vent in the cap when they were figuring it out, but just in case, give it a whirl.

Well after it sits at idle for about 5 min. and you press the throttle it chokes out and dies. When trying to fire it back up it runs for like a few sec.
If I let it sit for 3-5 min. it runs perfect and then the cycle begins again. The fan is not kicking on but I do not know if that has anything to do with it.
Thanks,
Allen

I misunderstood your first post. From that description, it sounds like maybe the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay. Do you know if either was checked when it was in the shop for diagnosis? The 350 FourTrax and 350 Foreman are notorious for fuel pump problems is why I ask.
If that checks out ok,.. I think you will be needing to get further into the intake system as I dont really think your problem has anything to do with the ignition at all.

Hello those who replied.
I took the air cleaner housing off where the carb is exposed and have not yet had it die after warming up. I do not know if this is the cure. The air filter is clean so I do not know why just taking that off would change anything.
You guys have any ideas?
Thanks,
Allen
