400EX Smoking
#1
My future son in law bought a used Honda 400EX with a rebuilt engine and it smikes like a freight train. I'd venture to say that whoever rebuilt it didn't let the rings seat and it allowing the oil by pass. Can anyone suggest a source of information so I can tear this engine down and install new rings?
Thanks

If your looking for a maintenace manual for the quad try ebay/or a dealer. I got my manual from a fleetfarm and it hasn't steered me wrong yet.
Also, if your looking for a good overveiw schematic try www.bikebandit.com It brakes down the overview part by part.

Try a compression and leak down test first. Google it....I think there is a web site that explains the procedure.
On worn EX engines, the valve guides are the first thing to go, and will pass lots of oil. Perhaps the rebuilder did not replace them?

Hey I'm new, so you may be better off listening to one of the vets up there^^^ but it could be many things... Notches lined up in your rings, bad rings, OO don't run K&N airfilters either, even with an outerwear...they let to much dirt in and that is madness on your rings. But listen to the other guys too!! they seem to know what they are talking about! hehe

I know first hand....they pass very fine dirt particles! Best to give up a bit of performance for some engine longevity....

I know just as many people who swear by them that do against them. I am super cautious and check all over every other ride for signs. 2 years and nothing yet. I may learn my lesson the hard way but, until then I have no negatives from a properly oiled K&N.
