Default valve adjustment on 2004 rubicon 500

I am about to adjust the valves and I do not have a pull rope so how do I turn the engine to fine TDC? As I live in the Rockie Mtns, should I adjust carb jets. Most of the trails are up and long and I have experienced some overheating. I changed coolant and fresh oil but have a tick and suspect the valves need adj. It is a 2004 Rubicon Electric shift and has under 900 km. Should I be using low in the steeper stuff. I an stumped. I just bought this quad and have road a dirt bike for many years so this is a new way to travel.
