Gearing question on a 400ex
#1
I ride mostly with banshees, and we get out on some country roads and cut through some fields and they absolutely smoke me top end. What I was wandering is is there anyway for me to get in the transmission and make 4th and 5th gear faster? The way I figure it is I only use 2nd and 3rd in the woods, the only time I use 4th or 5th is when we are sustaining high speeds for long periods of times. Give me some info if you know anything about it like costs or what all would be involved or if it can even be done.

You can get more top end out of your bike but you are going to lose the bottom end. You can change out the front sprocket to a 16 tooth, and drop the rear sprocket down to about a 36 tooth. This should give you a little more speed on the top end, but you are going to be sluggish coming out of the hole. The cost for this change is rather nominal. The front sprockets will run you about $15 and the rear at $30. Give it a try. There's nothing worse that seeing a Honda getting beat by a Yamadog.

Yes I know about changing the sprockets out, but in fact I wanted to do the opposite. I want more low end for racing in gears 1,2,and 3. I want 4th and 5th gear to be like highway gears. Anyone else with any info? Also, I am planning to get the gt thunder 440 kit (including everything)
