Default Honda recon plethora of questions....

Its a shame the dude you bought it from, welded a shifter to it because the Recon ES comes from the factory with a spare shift fork in the storage box IN CASE your battery were to run low and you were deep in the woods.A low battery will cause the ES to not shift and if your deep in the woods somewhere, you would'nt want to have to drive all the way back in 5th gear.

Sounds like a PROJECT to me. Good Luck.

Part it out, make some money on it an buy one with the manual shifter. I'm a honda man for the last 42 years, but those es bikes are the biggest piece of junk Honda has ever come up with. 90% of the problems with hondas you read on the forums is that dang es system.

Default Honda recon plethora of questions....

I found a 2001 model last night for $400 that is a manual shift. It needs a starter, the carb cleaned, and a new seat. All of which are perfect on the one I have. What are the motors worth in these things? The motor is in nice shape on this one......

ya oughta get 250-300 out of the complete spare motor if it runs good. You can probably pay for both of'em with the parts off of the one.

The other recon sold. I'm thinking about going ahead with this one. I've been toying with the idea of trying to convert it to a manual shift. The engine is good in it. I just don't know what all it would take to do it.
