It will holds more than it needs as any engine does. That's why you have a dip stick that says |full - - - - -|add.

Default why is my 400ex smoking right after i change the oil

Lot of good info on here
Sometimes when changing oil, if the oild oil was a generic oil or has been in the quad for a while then Honda oil put in it, they will smoke as the Honda oil will clean tarnish out of the inside of the engine. It has good detergents in it. If this is the case, the quad will stop smoking in a short time once the scum is burned off the pistonm valves etc...

not narrowing it down any, but if its smoking at high rpm's its ether valve seals begining to go, or too much oil. i would change the oil agean. just to make sure you dont have too much oil in it. like loshe191 said there 2 drain plugs

This is an all to common mistake! Be sure you didn't put the oil filter in backward!!! This will starve it for oil and toast your engine!

Procedure:

What oil did you put in it???? Be sure to run a motorcycle specific oil that is rated API SG/JASO MA. I highly recommend Maxima.
