why is my 400ex smoking right after i change the oil
My '99 owners manual says 2.3 quarts. Which I found is way too much...
While checking the oil level during the ride this past weekend, it overflowed out of the dipstick hole and all over the oil tank. The 400ex is an excellent machine, but one of the only frustrating things I've found so far is getting a consistent reading when checking the oil level, especially after an oil and filter change.

Because they don't know what the h3LL they are doing half the time. I went down one day to ask on a wheeler I was working on for a buddy. He said, "Uh, I got one I put 2 quarts in lets check" he gauged and was like "That looks about right".
Best to undershoot slightly, gauge, and add than to overfill.
