Default 2007 TRX250ex Bent Axle

I have a new 2007 TRX250ex. My son's friend might have bumped a tree and the axle is now slightly bent. I have done some quick research on the repair and it doesn't look too complicated. Can someone give me advise? Should I bite the bullet and take it to the dealer? Any suggestions and tips would be appreciated.....besides not letting friends use the ATV...we learned that lesson.

Thanks, Neil

All you can do is get a service manual and see what all is involved, and see if you are up to the job!

I have the same problem right now! I haven't looked at the manual yet, but there are the gears in there that you will have to deal with and that drum brake. I will certainly replace the bearing while I have it apart. Bearings are cheap, and that is good insurance against having to get into it again any time soon.

Here's the info from the page having to do with the axle in the manual, not sure if either of you have one but here it is anyway...

Rear Axle Removal:

Remove the rear brake drum (tell me if you need the pages on this)

Remove the following:
-cotter pin
-hub nut (while holding the hub securely)
-left wheel hub
-collar
-axle (by driving it from the left side using a rubber mallet)
-dust seals (from the swing arm and gear case)
- O-ring

I'd appreciate it if you could forward the drum brake removal. Looking at my ATV, I don't see where the drum brake makes contact with the axle. The brake lines seem to enter the back casing away from the axle itself.

You can probably tell I have never owned an ATV or motorcycle. This one's my first. I am pretty handy and this doesn't look terribly complicated. My biggest obstacle will be to gather the proper tools.

As far as the gears go, I have read nothing that indicates that I need to be aware of how the axle relates to the gears. Everything I've read says, that once you loosen everything up and dismantle the wheel hubs you just bang it out with a rubber mallet...same goes for putting it back in. I haven't come across anything that says the gears need to be dealt with. Any comments.

Thanks

Going to type this briefly, gotta head to work.

Rear Brake Removal

REMOVE THE FOLLOWING
-right rear wheel
-cotter pin
-rear wheel hub nut
-rear wheel hub
-collar
-3 bolts
-skid plate

Now set the parking brake. Hold the rear axle nut and remove the rear axle lock nut using the special tools
TOOL:
Lock nut wrench set 07916-9580300
Lock nut wrench, 41 mm 07916-9580400

Remove the rear axle nut using the 41 mm lock nut wrench that I specified above.

-Remove the spring washer and thrust washer

Unlock the parking brake.

Remove the following
-adjusting nuts
-joint pins
-springs
-brake cables
-5 bolts
-brake panel
-O-ring
-brake drum
-seal ring
-collar

Not sure if you need this but I won't be home for hours and idk if anyone else can get you the info, I'm sure a few can tho

REMOVE THE FOLLOWING
-brake shoes
-shoe springs (mark the shoes to indicate their original positions)
-brake arm nut and bolt
-brake arm
-return spring
-indicator plate
-brake cam
-felt seal
-dust seal
-dust seal (I guess this is another one)
-snap ring

Now drive the bearing out of the brake panel

I hope this helps you out, if you need clarification I will be home later, and hopefully I'll have a digital camera to take photos if you need em'.

After checking out your reply regarding the brake drum, I think this might be over my head. The ATV is brand new. I don't want to take too many chances. The axle itself sounded pretty doable. I can just picture the brake drum disassembled and me not being able to get it back to original.....there will be one part sitting on the garage floor and me scratching my head. Thanks for your help.

go ahead a get a manual it should have step by step instructions ,along with pictures ,part numbers and everything else you need to know ....,but its not all that difficult ....and sooner or later brake work is always required so its not a bad idea to learn how they work as well...and you've got forum support as well
