New 420 needs break in maintainence
#1
I've got a 08 rancher and i have done the break in period and have a little over 20 hours on it. I was just wondering what its been costing everyone else to have the valves checked and have the oil changed? Thanks
Oh and y isn't this included in the purchase of an atv? My future father inlaw bough a new grizzly last year and the dealership treats him like a god or something all this stuff was free??? Poor college kid here so just wondering what its gonna run me as i don't really have the time to take it down myself to check the valves

A valve adjustment on that machine should be 1 hour of labor (~$70 around here).
As for the oil/filter change, if you are even a little bit mechanicaly oriented, you can do that yourself and save some $$$. I suggest running one of Maxima's oils (Extra if you can afford it).
Also, a good idea to change out the gear oil in the front and rear differentials.
Clutch adjustment is easy, and the procedure is in your owner's manual.
I presume you keep up on the air filter....

I have bought two of the 420's. The dealer has done all of the post break-in service (20 hour service) for free except for oil and filter.</end quote></div>
You sure they did the valve adjustment????

Thanks guys and now that you mention it recon i think i might go ahead and just change the oil myself. Just one quick question, what do i torque the drain bolt to i've heard of some horror stories of breaking the case.

$120 out the door including oil & filter.
Read up on that oil change. May DIY have over tightend the drain plug and stripped or cracked the case. Its a very expensive fix.

If you cant do a oil and filter change than you better learn quick, it has to be done regularly every 50 hr for the life of the machine, and it must be a drag to haul a ATV to a dealership every time this simple and regular job needs to be done.
Easier to bring the oil and filter to the ATV than the ATV to the oil and filter.
Tighten bolt with common sense not a air powered impact wrench.

18 foot pounds is the drain plug torque
Whenever I change oil and service the 420's, I also clean the IACV
