Default Rancher 350 Cold Start Tips

Your Rancher has a carb heater, so before a cold start turn the key on and let it sit for a couple minutes to let the carb heater warm up!

Also, there is a black **** on the left side of the carb (the black **** on the right side is the idle adjustment). Push it and it will inject raw fuel into the carb to prime it!

Also, it has a recoil starter, so if your battery is having trouble in the cold, just use the recoil starter.

Thick gooey oil will bog your crank, and make it hard to turn the engine over. Run an oil weight appropriate for the outside temp. In cold weather, that will be at least a 10W30, but more probably a 5W30. (My favorite 5W30 is Maixma 530MX, but it is very expensive. If you are on a budget, look for Maxima Premium or Honda GN4.)

Also, as I recall the owner's manual recommends a hotter spark plug for cold weather!

Does my 2000 have a carb heater? It usually starts up in the cold unless it has been sitting for a couple weeks....... but there was one time last year where it did not want to start to a pretty long time. It was about 5 degrees out so it was cold.

Yeah, all the 350 carbs have it.

Like every quad, they are jetted lean at the factroy to meet emissions standards. A rejet can be very helpful too!

Learn something every day........ This is the first Honda I've ever owned, and the first 4x4 Ute so I'm still getting fully acquainted with it..... I supposed I should pick up a manual some time..........

The reason I posted this is the other day I had trouble starting my 350, then it occured to me that I had completely forgotten about the heater and primer...duh!

No I don't....... I do know the benefits though and if I actually rode my Rancher for fun I would totally get one.....

But since it is a work hog I don't really ever need it in 2wd. Even pulling my mower there are some steep hills in my yard where 2wd might slip......

But I have thought about it.....

You know what I did the other night plowing? I was turning around in the middle of the road and the thing just died on me....... I was thinking at first I ran out of gas or something I'm running through all the things on my head and starting to get pissed....I was two seconds away from getting my truck and pulling it back into the yard when it hit me........

With my bulky gloves I accidentally hit the kill switch while turning really sharp and lifting my plow at the same time......ugh...... that 3 position kill switch has foiled me numerous times now....lol.......
