Well i,m the proud new owner of a 01 400ex (Yellow)and when reading the book, it does not tell you how to to properly break it in.The only thing it says is when to change the oil and lube the chain and stuff like that. Can someone tell me the right way to do it. Thanks !!!!

Ride it like you normally would.
Just don't hold the throttle at one position for a long period of time.
Change your oil after the 3rd time out and get your vavles adjusted.
After that, ride it like you stole the *****!

i dont know if its the same for the 400ex....but in my auzuki quadsport owners manual... it says to stay within the 1/3 throttle range and go throught all the gears. change the oil the first hour then every 5 hours after the first 20 hours. after that, keep it in the half throttle range and change the oil every 10 hours for the next 40 hours. after that...according to the clymer manual, the bike is good to go....i dont know though, sounds kinda rough being out on that new 400ex being teasted to open it up and not being able to if you want it to run right.

The people I bought my ex from told me to drive it like you normally would with no break-in procedure. they were so wrong. So, I got it off the truck, brand new, and took it easy for 2 minutes and drove it hard for the rest of the break-in. I regret it. Now after a year 1/2 it smokes blue puffs of smoke.(Mobil 1 synthetic 15-50 is suppost to fix that problem) Most likly because the rings are worn from a hard break-in. The honda owners manual says take it cool for the first 15 miles. I would go through 1 tank of gas with not much throttle, and then give it speed bursts, and change the oil after the initial 5-10 hours.
