250R vs. Raptor
#5
I have been riding with 2 friends this pass winter that have the new Raprors. They like there Raptors very much, but I would not put up with the mod's that they have had to do to make the quad ridable in the woods. I don't think that the Raptor will hold up in a CC race. It have some very serious clutch problems. Because the quad is or was made for derest riding in does not work in the tight woods. They have done many mod's to try and get the thing to work. What it reality needs in a flywheel weight like is put on the 2-wheel MX bike and then it might work. Yes the Raptor will beat me in a drag race, but when we get in the woods it is a different story. If you shop around you can get a 400 for under $5500 compared to the $6500 for the Raptor. Just my 2 cents.

The reason that I sold my '89 250R was so that I could buy the new Raptor. I have not been disapointed in it so far. I have had no clutch problems, or any other problems for that matter. Stock for stock, in XC conditions, my money would be on the Raptor. If you wonder why no racing 250R-derived quads on the GNCC circuit have clutch problems, I can answer your question with one word- HINSON. Clutch baskets are the weak point for most modified quads. If and when I finally start doing internal mods on my Raptor, I will get a Barnett clutch kit for it, along with a Hinson basket.
With what other four-stroke ATV can you gain 10+ hp by putting on an aftermarket exhaust system?!?

I noticed something kind of interesting. I have the title for my 88 250R and the rated hp is 38.9 according to Honda. What is the stock hp on the Raptor? I beat they are very close. The dry weight for the R was 324.5 pounds. The Raptor is probably around 390-395 dry weight. I would say that would even them out on power. Just some trivia.
