just had valves adjusted as they said they were out. they said using oil was because of this. mechanic said still a noise coming from motor. thought maybe crank or rod going but unless we spent another 700.00 plus fix up, to find out they not sure. just ran machine and noise seems to go away and come back off and on

The TRX650 has a weak camchain tensioner which is the same " HAO " camchain tensioner since the 1985 ATC250 BigRed , we've changed several ...

is this tensioner to do with the crankshaft(sorry dumb woman here). took it out for ride and seemed to quiet down abit however now we are not sure if we hear a valve tic. still smokes when warmed up. is the tensioner hard and expensive to fix? thanks for everyones help

The tensioner just takes up the slack in the chain that drives the cam shaft. If it doesn't work properly, the chain can smack around in there.
If you are also hearing valve noise, checking the valve lash would be a good idea (if it hasn't been done recently).
Neither of these would cause the motor to burn oil, however. Also, a bit of mechanical noise is normal on most any atv engine.
How much oil is it using? How many miles on the machine? What kind of oil is in it? Has it ever been sunk (mud and/or grit got into motor)?
There's no dumb question, and working on ATV's isn't magic or anything. Getting a factory service manual, and maybe having someone experienced to look over your shoulder when you first start doing your own work would be a good idea.
