That would be something different, like maybe valve seals or rings.

How much is it burning? Visible blue smoke? Has it ever been sank?

just had valves adjusted as they said they were out. they said using oil was because of this. mechanic said still a noise coming from motor. thought maybe crank or rod going but unless we spent another 700.00 plus fix up, to find out they not sure. just ran machine and noise seems to go away and come back off and on

The TRX650 has a weak camchain tensioner which is the same " HAO " camchain tensioner since the 1985 ATC250 BigRed , we've changed several ...

The cam chain tensioner does seem to be a frequent topic on these.

I don't buy the dealer's claim that the valves being out of adjustment resulted in the oil usage, however.

The tensioner just takes up the slack in the chain that drives the cam shaft. If it doesn't work properly, the chain can smack around in there.

If you are also hearing valve noise, checking the valve lash would be a good idea (if it hasn't been done recently).

Neither of these would cause the motor to burn oil, however. Also, a bit of mechanical noise is normal on most any atv engine.

How much oil is it using? How many miles on the machine? What kind of oil is in it? Has it ever been sunk (mud and/or grit got into motor)?

There's no dumb question, and working on ATV's isn't magic or anything. Getting a factory service manual, and maybe having someone experienced to look over your shoulder when you first start doing your own work would be a good idea.
