Default Trouble with an old trx 350

Hello all
I am new to the forum and would like someone to give me some input on a problem I am having with my 86 trx 350.
It was running ok an seemed to start missing and running rich. The fuel pump and relay are working fine so I rebuilt the carb but didn't see anything that looked really bad. It starts up but you can't get it to accelerate unless you reach in and lift the slide with your finger as you run the throttle. I will take off but still does not really fire clean and crisp. There is no diaphram in the carb upper end to control the slide. After playing with it we started thinking about the ignition system. It almost sounds like it is breaking up, bad coil, cdi ???
Anyone who has some input it would be appreciated.

Thanks
Larry

I will go ahead and replace the coil and wire to start with. The plug is new.
I checked the valves and they are set and opening and closing ok. Also checked the compression releif cable and it is adjusted ok and not holding anything open.
Thanks
