2006 Foreman 500 ES 4x4, 4x4 will not engage.

I found the foreman on craigslist it has high miles (3200)and was recently worked on. New A-arm, spindle and other proper steering components. I was going to go out for a test drive and a look see but I got a call from the seller stating that the atv was no longer for sale because the 4wd will not engage. Any ideas or a good estimate of what the worst case problem could be? or what the repair cost would be givin the worst case problem?
I was thinking of offering him $2400 with all the issues and miles on it. Any help would be great.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum.
That isn't all that many miles for a Foreman. A wheel bearing, tie rod end or ball joint wouldn't be an unusual part to replace due to wear, but the A arm and spindle would make me wonder if it has been wrecked.
4x4 not engaging could be anything from a dirty connection to needing a new final drive clutch and front dif... so it's really hard to guess what the repair costs might be.
If you can afford to spend more, I think if I were you I'd pass on this one and look for one with no issues and known service history (or go new).

Thanks for the advise. I got the same answer from a honda shop. They told me that they still had new 07' in the box Foreman 500 ES's for 4999 plus a plow. i think it is hard to pass that up.
Thanks Again

That sounds like a good deal, though unless you really like the push to shift buttons I'd get foot shift.
The newer electric shifts seem to be better than previous versions, but there is still an occasional thread about an issue cropping up.
