Default 03 400ex modification question

Yes I was hoping somebody could help me I am thinking about putting in a stock bore (85mm) high compression piston i was wondering if i would put in a 10:1 piston what cam should i put in a stage 1 or a stage 2 and would i be able to still run pump fuel. Also i have heard taht if you run a stock bore piston with a cam if could actually perform worse i was wondering if anybody had any input. the other option i was looking into is a 11:1 high compression stock bore piston with a cam and i was curious on peoples input on what stage cam i should put in. Dont be affraid to tell the truth because im looking for a slight performance upgrade and i have heard taht these two modifications would be a major upgrade. Any input would be appreciated...Thanks Tim

The cam can't tell what bore you are running,it's the compression of the piston that makes it work better with certain cams. There are cams for stock comp., higher comp. ( 10:1, 10.5:1) and some that work best with "racing" pistons (11:1 up to 13:1) Bottom line is, to get the most out of most of the cams out there, you have to at least run a 10:1 piston (stock is somewhere around 8.5 or 9:1) a "racing" cam will give you top end, but lose bottom end grunt, you get that back by running a higher comp piston, and a bigger bore just lets you pull more air and fuel in for even more power. If you stay in the 10-10.5 range, you can run pump gas, if you start fooling with 12 or more, you will need race gas or premium mixed with race gas.

Alright so if decide to put in a stock bore 11:1 compression piston and stage 2 cam i should be able to get away with running premium fuel and it should perform much better than the stock bore and cam right??

A setup like that will give you a big bump in low end grunt, and pull hard all the way to the top end, I would also recommend a +1000 rpm cdi so you can get the most out of your new power band. I hope you have a good aftermarket exhaust, the stocker will choke off too much power,no sense wasting the time and money modding the inside if you don't improve the flow on the outside.
