My 2005 trx450r
#1
Hey, i just got my real first atv, i started with a timberwolf 250 that i inly rode once and then sold because it needed parts which were too expensive so we sold it. now i found a 2005 trx450r and i have to say, its got power!! its like brand new with the same tires from 05, it looks like it came off the showroom floor and i got it for $2600. My question is what do I need to do to maintain it, besides the obvious like the fluid, airfilter, oils, and tires. I have heard that you have to rebuild the top end after so many hours, is this true and are there any other maintence procedures that i am forgetting? thx

Change the oil, both engine and trans, frequently and keep the air filter clean and oiled.
You DO NOT need to rebuild the topend on a regular basis. I have over, way over, 100 hours on my '04 (with a 480 jug) and it runs like a top!
Adjust the valves every 25 or so hours and you get years of enjoyment from this quad. Great price too!

I suppose that you have figured out by now, that unlike any other quad on the planet, this engine and trans use seperate oils (God bless Honda!).
Why you need frequent oil changes: http://www.belray.com/scripts/...1d7-b921-64a4cf6d0144
Good article. Everything that applies to the 450/250 dirt bikes, applies to your R:

If any engine can benefit from a high quality ester synthetic oil, this is it! I run Redline, or Maxima Extra or Ultra on the engine side. On the tranny side, you can run one of the trans specific lubes, like Maxima MTL or Honda's own HP Trans Oil, or better yet Motul Trans Oil Expert. I run Redline 80W Motorcycle Gear Oil with ShockProof....which is totally weird stuff.
Does it have the HRC kit??? I and a dozen friends, have a couple hundred hours on our R's, and nobody needing a rebuild yet!!!
Frequent valve adjustments don't hurt either!
