I recently purchased a 2001 300ex. I bought it knowing there was a problem with it shifting. So here is whats wrong. When I go to shift i can keep shifting the lever up or down and really have no idea what gear I am in. Second when i do finally find 1st gear and shift up, it wants to sometimes jump out of second and fourth gear. First, the shifting up and down. What is stopping it, or actually not stopping the lever from shifting down or up. I took the side case off and inspected the little shift lever and it seems to be fine. Ideas??? Secondly, is it a bent shift fork inside the case or is it something that is outside the case and easily accessible. I really dont want to split the case due to there is so much crap to do to get to that point but if its needed i'll do it.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks much!

well you have a transmission problem...bent shift forks occoured commenly on the 250x's(300ex predacessor) but where beefed up on the 300ex's. could be, but im gona say it will need to be disassembled and have the case split...i would recomend a mechanic. it will be costly, mabe $300. but obviously get it fixed, doubt you could sell it for much in that condition+ you cant ride it like that
