Frozen rear axle carrier 01 300EX
#1
Adjusting loose chain. Backed out 2 cap srews on carrier, and have broken a pc of knuckle adjuster trying to adjust. Am I missing something else? Used screw driver, bar, large channel locks and can't get loose. Chain very loose, trying to move adjuster down. tricks to this? Thanks for any help.

If you broke an ear off, you still have 2 more. The idea is to use the same 6mm allen wrench that you used to loosten the cap screws. Slip it into an ear. However, since yours sounds like it is pretty frozen, spray WD-40 or PB Blaster at the joints on each side and just ease it up & back, up & back, even if it doesn't seem like it is moving, it will move just enough to get that lubricating spray to work into the joint. Keep spraying and working, it should eventually move free. The joint I'm talking about is the ends of the carrier where it butts against the disk holdder on one side and the thing with the ears on it on the other.

broke another ear off adjuster ring, and still not loose. Is adjuster ring part of the bearing carrier? Time for new kit? If so, who's kit and why? machine all stock now.....

PB is definately better. It is a penetrating (IE: has advanced capillary effect) oil. WD40 was the 40 attemp at a Water Displacement oil, hence the "WD40". Just dumb luck that paid off.
PB and wooden mallet. whach anything that wont bend or break off. The shock will work like Ranger discribed with the wiggling, but the wood will give before most anything will break.
You might try using a flat screwdriver to pry a little more space between the pinch bolts to make sure they have really "let go". Also take the little bolt out from the bottom. May help, cant hurt.
I bet the carrier is a delear only part. Just my best guess.

i have the same problem on my 2000 300ex.i have tryed everything and i've used almost a whole can of pb blaster.i have bent screwdrivers and i have even broke a punch and ive bent 2 or 3.trying to turn the adjuster. i've heared the best thing to do is to take everything apart and put new bearings in.but i really don't want to do that because my bearings are good.. the adjuster is just frozer.if any of you know a easier way let me know...thanks

I'd try heating up the back of the swing arm with a heat gun and tapping it with a hammer a bit to see if it'll break free.
Since you've already sprayed a bunch of petroleum products in there, keeping a fire extinguisher handy would not be a terrible idea.
If that doesn't work, you'll probably have to remove the wheel, hub, lock nut, brake caliper, and the circlips and remove the axle. Once you have the axle out, you should be able to pound the bearing carrier out with a block of wood and a hammer. Clean the crud and re-install.
If you can swing it, a new carrier and bearings is around $100. It's a fair amount of work to get everything apart.
