Rubicon skid plates

I have been trying to find a full skid plate for my Rubicon. High Lifter makes a small skid for the front between the bash plate and the stock skids. ATV Charleys has an Armadillo plastic one that looks terrible, but at least has access to the oil filter. Just got my Cabelas catalog last night and it looks like Maier has one too. I will call them today to see if I cant get some more info on it. I have talked to the folks at PRM and they said they were a couple of months away. I would much rather have a metal one. Has anyone else had any luck?

Considered the one at Atv Charlies but it's way to funny looking,I will be waiting for nicer also.

Question for you guys. Where is the picture of the new Armodillo skid for the Rubicon? I went to ATV Charley's and didn't see any pics of it. Just curious to see how it looks.

From what I was told by ATV Charleys the Armadillo skid looks identical to the Rancher skid. Including that huge piece of plastic that wraps up the front.

I just got off the phone with "Jeff" at Maier. He stated that the skid they made does not have a hole for the oil filter. They thought this would leave too big of an opening. You must remove theirs for an oil change. He said it is mounted using their rubber coated P clamps and not through factory bolts. This sound a little more promising for me since I have the HL fender kit installed. My biggest problem is removing those factory skids will cause me to take bolt out of that fender kit which was a nightmare to get on. If PRM does not make a better one, I will find some way to fabricate one myslef.

I went with the Maier. I had one on my previous 450, and it worked great. Took a LOT of abuse! For $45.00, you can't beat the protection.

TEXMud: Thanks for the info, I didn't think I was that blind. Anyway, If it looks like my Rancher skid plate that I think is good. The OEM brush guard then will be covered and prevented from getting broke again. Also I like the way it goes up on my Rancher for the reason it keeps my bash plate from getting all bent up. Besides if you don't like the way it wraps up, cut it off and make holes for it to mount snug. Then it's just a normal skid.
I do agree with you they are not much for looks, however they are effective rock skids plates compared to aluminum or steel.

alaskaweasel, do you have any pics of the Armadillo mounted on your Rancher. I thought about cutting it and that may be my solution. How does the plastic hold up against rocks. It seems like it would break very easily.

Wait for the ones from PRM. We have their skid plates on both the Rancher & Recon. Once nice feature about PRM is the skid plates they produce are .250 (1/4") thick where much of their competition produces .190 (less than 1/5")thick. PRM has very good prices on their products.

Rubicon owners do yourselves a favor when you take your original skid plates off. Take a drill and drill out the skid plate's original holes to the next size larger in drill bit size. Take your drill bit and kinda wallow out the hole a little bit. This will make no difference anywhere that will matter as in refitting back to original frame bolt holes. What it will do is make your reinstallment of the skid plate about a 100 times easier to do each time. The factory holes were cut so precise that any deflection in the skid plate made it almost impossible to reattach after changing the oil plus the fact that you were almost guarantied to cross thread the bolts trying to get them in. This will speed up the process and keep you from taking a sludge hammer to your skid plate.
