Default 300ex chain adjustment wont work?!

Hey everyone, I havent been on this forum in years as im an MX guy now on two wheels but I recently purchased a 300ex for my gf to ride and I'm attempting to adjust the chain and it is being a PITA. I loosened the two pinch bolts to the point I took them out. THere is that round thing next to the sprocket with the notches in it that I am apparently supposed to turn. I used a pair of very large channel locks but I cant get the adjuster to budge one way or the other. It rotates about an eigth of an inch either way and then I can hear/feel it hit something. What am I doing wrong? The bike is a 2002. I sprayed some WD on it thinking that would help, but still no go. I tried jiggling the adjuster back and forth (counter/clockwise) and it sounds like "clang, clang clang clang" each time it hits something.

Any help would be really really appreciated.

My 300ex is a 01 and when I loosen the pinch bolts the adjuster will move with no effort.

I tried taking out that bottom bolt and still no go. Like I said, it goes back and forth but it feels like theres something in the way stopping it. What else can it be?

That's strange because there's nothing in the bearing carrier housing except the bearing carrier. I wonder if the brake caliper is hanging it up or something. Or maybe something is broken inside like the spacer bushing. You might want to take it out and have a look. It's a pretty easy job.

My 400ex was having the same problem last year. i rarely have to adjust the chain and i went to tighen it and i couldnt budge it with anything! i was ****ed to say the least. so i took it apart to change the rear bearings while doing this i took a bunch of grease and lubed EVERYTHING. the bearings, and the inside and outside of the carrier and also lube the inside of the swing arm where the carrier goes. once i did all that i could tighten my chain by hand it turned that easy. i hope this helps. BTW its a pain to get the lock nuts off the rear axle unless you have to proper tools.

maybe ill just try removing some links of the chain? I cant figure this out?!?! ahhhh. It feels like the brake caliper is in the way, but since ive never done this im not even sure how exactly the chain adjustment is supposed to move to tighten the chain.

could something be binded up inside the axle carrier? It feels like something it hitting each time i try to turn it. Is there any way to get a service manual on this quad for the rear assembly? I tried spraying some lubricant inside the axle carrier. Maybe thatll help. Id really appreciate any type of ideas guys.

You can find all of the schematics on Bike Bandit. Its sounds like you might need to pull it apart clean up the parts and inspect for damage.
