Personally, I'd leave the filter stock for now.

As far as break-in, it is important to get on the throttle very early in the break in, in order to provide the rings the pressure and temp they need to seat.

Run it hard, and run it through it's RPM range (without lugging it or bouncing off the rev limiter).

I'd also suggest a very early oil/filter change, but stick with dino until broken in.

By 20 hours it would likely be fully broken in.

I have a 2007 400ex that I just bought new about a month ago, and in the manual it says to run it for 10 hours or 100 miles for intial break in period. I changed my oil right around that time, and also read the manual to see if there is anything else to do, like check valve clearance etc. Also let the engine warm up for a few minutes before you get on it. The rings will set better if you run it at half throttle, but don't baby it too much and don't pin out your gears either. Just take it easy and let it break in nicely. Also if you haven't already, consider looking at a synthetic oil with an ester base additive, because it will protect the top end and keep it lubricated for start ups. With the 400ex being an air cooled machine, keeping proper lubrication is very important!

Save all your engine mods until after 20 hours. This is when the engine is completely broken in.....and notice that it is also the time when Honda recommends the first valve adjustment.

Another piece of advice, is to do all your engine mods at once, to avoid multiple rejets. You don't want to do a filter and have to rejet for that, then later do a muffler and have to rejet yet again, then mess with the airbox and have to rejet yet again....you get the picture.

I have used the Motoman break-in method for some time now, and he is right on the money! (Do you know that Honda dynos each vehilce, throtle pinned through all the gears, before it leaves the factory? What are they doing? Seating the rings for you, just like Motoman says you need to do!)

Also, I do an oil/filter change at 1 hour, to get any metal shavings out of the engine right away. I change oil several times during break-in, then switch to an ester synthetic like Redline or Maxima Extra or Ultra.

first of all, thanks for all the help on this one guys!

i need some info on the jetting. i have had 3 atvs and know the basics of an engine and carburetor, but nothing about jetting and all. i want to learn how to do all this type of stuff, so any links or vids?

so what engine oil should i use after break in 10 hrs? like weight, brand, type, all that.

are there any other oils that i should change out?
