How hard is it to replace 400EX rings?
#1
Ok im 14 and i noticed my EX is just starting to smoke and i have 10w-40 in it so i think its time for new riings. Is it a pain to do? Could I do it myself or would it be a good idea to take it in?

Get a Honda service manual first before you attempt to undertake the rebuild. It's really not that hard at all. I've done about 20 re rings jobs over the years. I would suggest that you hone the cylinder and install a new piston while you're in there and save yourself the trouble later.

Getting a factory service manual is excellent advice.
I'd also suggest having someone who is experienced there to help you if you haven't done anything like this before.
I would also take the cylinder and piston to a machine shop. They will be able to tell you if the cylinder is OK to hone and use as it is, or if its taper and wear exceeds service limits and it needs to be bored larger for an oversize piston.
Likewise, they could take a micrometer to the piston and tell you if it is OK to reuse, or if it is shot and it would be a waste of time and money to put it back in.
They might charge a small fee, especially if you have them hone it.
