01 400ex smokes when started
#1
My quad smokes a little when its first started then clears up when its warm. Something bad gonna happen soon or don't worry to much. I dont have to add any oil between changes which is once a month thanks.

I would do the basic things like compression testing, to be sure it isn't the rings. But, valve guides are the first thing to go when this engine starts showing its age. They get worn and start passing oil. Not partucularly difficult to replace.

I agree with reconranger. It's probably valve seals. They shrink when they are cold, so oil gets past them and into the cylinder when you first start. But as the engine warms up, they expand and seal off. Nuttin to panic about but they will continue to get worse and then you may start fouling plugs.

Running an oil that has a very high "film strength" (HT/HS or High Temperature/High Shear), can help seal rings and guides that are showing their age. I would suggest Maxima Extra, ester synthetic.
